What are people's experience with tillage radish establishment. What method was used to establish them, seed rates, sowing dates, in a mixture or sole variety.

Any one got some like this

As far as I know Tillage Radish was only available in cover crop mixtures in 2013, however for 2014 a Daikon Radish will be ready for market as a sole variety. The recommended seed rate is 2.5kg/acre.

We had some in a mixture really impressed with it does break up the soil got some sheep running over it at the moment to graze it off . Just direct drilled it in early sept . Will be doing more tillage raddish this year on ground that is going into spring crops not all will get grazed off some will be left and sprayed off then dd either sb or sw . Awaiting a price for the seed might try some in some game covers to see if it is here early enough .

how much grazing did you get out of the radish compared to say stubble turnips? I did a patch of fodder radish last year and found the graizing was less.

Also (serious question) is it right to graze sheep on pure radish swards? How strong is the taste or does it matter?

Cheers, (should have looked at Phils picture at the start of the thread !).
I am familiar with these as "mooli radish", very popular with the asian comunity. If you could find the right contacts you could make rather more out of them than fodder.

I can only offer that the results one gets from the radish will be quite contingent on the available nutrients. A lot of people see the massive tubers in some ad pictures and think that it must always grow like this. It does not. If your previous crop scavenged all but the smallest bit of nutrient from the soil, the radish will not have what it needs to grow like that.

As @Knockie has said, yes we have tillage radish this year. They came in the DSV cover crop mixes and I like them a lot. the TR seemed to establish quicker then most of the other plants in the mix and they just got on with it. The pictures were taken over a month ago. The mixes were planted on the first of feb and did take a long time to germinate down to it being very dry at the time. I would say it was 2-3 weeks before we have a very thin covering. Then they just went wild and kept growing, No N was applied.

Ok. Very good show that.

Someone told me that it was worth spending the money on a mix from DSV than say a Pedders mix because they said its better quality of seed = better growth. Any thoughts?
We have over here at least 1/2 a dozen of companies chasing the cover crop mix market. and so there are lot's of comparable trials. So far, as far as I have seen results, the DSV mixes are always in the leading crop and most of the time outperforming.
Yes there will be some new mixes coming and there are some more mixes down the pipeline.
There is more in the development of mixes than just mixing some different varieties together in various rates. It's rely a lot of research and mix of various technologies which lead to the mixes how they are.
the once which visited us in June the last years always had the chance to see some of them. :)
