Second we try supermarkets would publish any correspondence and destroy us. Folk will be buying more direct this month anyway. Good time together but some more Tesco shares perhaps?

Noes the time to increase our margin leaving the price where it is for the end user but decreasing the processors and supermarkets margin?

Imports have or will stop so we’re going to have to be self sufficient for a period of time and this situation could easily happen again.

So why can’t we change things?

I agree. Some might think we'd be taking advantage of the unfortunate situation we are all in but in reality it's using the only weight we have to get the balance back. Circumstances like this don't happen too often.

Because your own population will remember your profiteering during a pandemic and eviscerate you when things return to normal.

And rightly so.
But the population aren't our major customers, the supermarkets are. It's the supermarkets that will be upping the price to the consumer not the farmer.
The consumer will see that a loaf of bread has gone up 5p, it won't know that the arable farmer got 1p of that.

Yeah, who do you think the supermarkets will point at?

I dont think now is the time to be talking like this and everybody who thinks like this is no better than the panic shoppers in my opinion. The time to talk is after the crisis not now and it will be listened to I'm sure.Farmers at the moment are in a lot better position than most of the population so I think the whingeing should stop

Why will imports/exports stop?
They might slow down for a week or two, but stop?

What are you as a farmer going to plant today that will feed the UK population in 1 month.
Countries depend on trade, I don't see that changing. I believe demand is already starting to ramp up from China as they look to restock.

How do we ever get away from supermarket control. After all they were saying there was more demand for smaller stores in towns and cities. I guess it’s still all about convenience in the rushed world we live i.

with all the panic buying and the likes of some key worker cannot get to shops for their food till after they are empty,
I would not rule out the return of ration books for food for all the uk, there is and will be enough food to go round,
however them that panic and bulk buy will just carry on, even if the likes of the supermarkets limit a max of 2 items per customer, a lot of the customers will just go round the shops getting 2 of what they want in every shop, and go shopping most if not all days of the week,,
it is a pity if the likes of a nurse does a 12 hour shift, and when she calls in to the shop on way home to see empty shelves, and they need to eat and sleep to function correctly
