Tine harrow - usage

Hi all

Want to get to grips with harrowing and rolling our permanent pasture - when to do it, with what, and to what end...

The issues:

  • Poached fields from winter grazing
  • Thatched, mossy ground
  • Compacted soil that needs aeration.

I only have a tined harrow and a roller.

So my questions:

- can I harrow at any time of year? With the lack of rain, the soil is very dry at the moment. Obviously not the best time to roll but will the harrow deal with the poaching and thatching? If not, when's the best time?
- do I need to be careful using a tined harrow (rather than a chain harrow) - will it cope with rough, poached ground. It's not particularly stoney.

Thanks

You might be surprised how well tine Harrow's can level a rough patch of ground. I'd say go for it 👍
Rolling will compact it and help reduce moisture loss afterwards too.
