I have to take off a v-belt pulley attached with a Gib head tapered key ,to fit a new Gib Head to the chain sprocket behind it,as the original Gib Head key is slightly worn and gradually slides out. Any tips on on how to remove and refit the Gib head keys, with out knocking the keys in so much that one splits the pulley/sprocket it is holding in place. Also how does on stop the sprocket/pulley moving out of alinement while knocking the key in.Any tips help will be very much appreciated,as I am an amateur with a hammer:eek::eek:;)

When removing a pulley held with a gib head key, the secret is to knock the pulley further on to the shaft therefore pushing it of the key. A proper key drift can then be used, but trying to remove with the key drift before loosening the pulley will result in a key with no head and everything still attached,,,,,, as for refitting the key you have to assemble it knowing that it will move as you tighten the key.

Many thanks for the info ,very helpful(y)(y)

Fitting of the key very important need contact in 3 points minimum eg bottom and 2 points on taper. If you have good contact pulley shouldn't slide when knocking in. Key should be a neat sliding fit in both keyways. Make a notch in head to keep extraction tool in place and limit possibility of jumping out and rounding off, can also taper to suit tool. Drill morse taper tool works also. I always drill and tap shaft for bolt and block behind key to reduce chance of key falling out. HM

as said above, if any space behind the pulley to knock it on a bit, get a good bit of pipe is best that fits over the shaft and gib head key that sits on the face of the pulley all round, now find the biggest hammer you have got to hit the pipe,
I say the biggest hammer, you will find you are more likely to damage the pulley with a little hammer just tapping away at it, than a very big hammer hitting it with light bats, its all to do with the kinetic energy there is more in a bigger hammer,

as above proper drift is best, remember a proper drift has angled sides that taper to hold it in place, if you think it is thigh, then clamp drift into the bottom of the head of the key with self grips/G clamp etc

you would be surprised what a jubilee clip will hole when fitted on a shaft, when fitting the pulley clean the shaft with sand paper, then fit a jubilee clip behind it to stop it moving on when fitting the key, put very small smear of copper slip on the shaft,
fit pulley and gib head key and fit another jubilee clip to hold key in place
