Carlsbad not far away from a mate of mine in Artesiaa snippet of my American adventure, might have missed of some days/night but it was pretty frantic
day 1 arrived at El Paso, having met an english guy on train, we hired a car travelled to Carlsbad caverns slept in car
day2 walked into juarez over the border bridge, stayed at a guys house we met in a bar!
day3/4 train to LA must have slept on train, train to san diego crossed border jumped on a bus to Santa Rosilina, baja peninsular slept on bus
day5 discovered real poverty in mexico night in run-down mexican hotel
day 6 got the first bus back to civilisation
day 7 night in LA youthhostel
day8 hired car with 2 more guys drove through death valley .motel
day 9 hoover dam then vegas youth hostel
day10grand canyon youth hostel snowed in
day11 , down canyon then back to vegas, returned to casino but couldnt find any energy
day12 drove to Reno, lots of snow nearly ran out of fuel , -20 or so outside, found a motel with restaurant doing yorkshire puddings
day 13 San Fransisco,
day14 Cartmel
day 15 returned hire car having driven 2200 miles, 4 drivers taking shifts,
never met my traveling companions before or since, but we had a laugh I can tell you, and a few arguments, thats a lot of driving and not much sleeping.
I went from there to Seattle then eastward , to Chicago Boston as I had a hotel job offer near Boston, it was either that or or go home as I had zero money left.
We chose Santa rosalina in mexico on the advise of a very pretty girl at the mexican tourist infomation, she said it was a great whale watching place, and because we were too busy looking at her to listen properly, we believed everything she said.
In reality it is/was a run down empty shell of a copper mining town, our hotel had a pool but it was empty with weeds growing out of it.
Still the mexican experience was amazing, no need to repeat it but eye opening. the first few miles of road south from tijuana are/where surrounded by the orange box villages. literally people living in orange boxes waiting chance to jump the border.
