How much straw would a 700 kg suckler eat in a 180 day winter ? Presuming straw is the majority of her diet obviously mineral offerd and some concentrate or liquid feed.

I don't think she'd be capable of eating any more than 12kg/day of straw.

Generally dry matter intake is 2.5 -3% of an animals liveweight. The younger the stock the higher the % intake. On a 700KG cow it would eat 17-21KG of dry matter per day or 3.06 - 3.7 tonnes over a 180 day winter

Can increase intakes/lower losses by grinding but add cost of course.

I could never get at cow that size to eat that much DM

This was the argument for treating straw years ago.... just use liquid feed now, laced with urea!

Personally, I like some grass based forage going into the girls too...

Worked this out the other day for roughly 650Kg cows on silage + straw diet.

55 cows were getting 1 four foot bale of silage a day (through the chopper) and 1.5 five foot bales of spring barley straw a day.
