Top dressing layers muck

Hi, is anyone too dressing wheat in the spring with layers muck?
can you spread 24m evenly?
What value of N is there per Ton?
I have been offered layers muck, I am waiting on an analysis and wondered how others got on and the pros and cons

Use a spreader with discs so you get an even spread. A local guy used a normal rear discharge last year right next to the main road and the striping was terrible!

Better ploughed in,,, less smell and less wastage of nitrogen. We have done it but depending on weather and crop stage it can smell , also I wouldn’t be confident at 24m spread accuracy with any spreader, we have used bunning and Richard western both good spreaders but not that good.
It is a very variable product so spreading at 12m is a much better result all round

Last year all the wheat here was done in March with our own broiler muck. Spread at 15m on 30m tram lines. The extra wheel marks is thought to be outweighed by saving in nitrogen. This year if weather allows it will be done on wheat and rape. Hopefully a new spreader should make it more accurate in the application. Last year the headland was done with straight nitrogen to save extra wheel marking and there was a noticeable difference very quickly in colour. Not sure about yield but would be representative anyway

Did it for a number of years before organic conversion. Baler man didn’t appreciate it but otherwise fantastic. Rocket fuel. 12m spread unless it’s a bit damp then it’ll flick a bit further

If you had a sizeable area to do each spring I bet even buying one of those spangly new spreaders like CPF has posted would soon pay for itself in a few years from the saving just on P and K let alone the nitrogen saving.

I used to have clients who would umbilical their wheat each spring. That and another 50-80 units of N would be ample for the season.

@ollie989898 how many tons an acre would you apply in ‘one’ hit? I was thinking 5 ton per acre which I think would give me 30 kg of N, about a third of my total N requirement.

Why would it bother the baler man ? Ruts?
What typical rate did you go at and how much N do you think it saved you?

Headland rut. Not a problem for combining but Baler travels faster. Had to watch his tines on ruts.
agronomist didn’t want much N cut but significant micro nutrients and our crops looked much greener in a dry year compared to locals.
don’t remember how much we actually cut N but we were well impressed. Did it a few years running. Soil OM now 8-10%!
