Topping grassland

Cannot be beyond the whit of man. I am pretty sure Edlington could make something, mine is 3PtL, but I had the optional trailed subframe as well for going behind small tractors or a quad. I imagine a ram either electric or hydraulic could be used to lift the boom up and out of the way somehow...
Was thinking for docks in grass , drop it on the dock then lift again

Surely it's hardly under load with a 9' disc mower, raised up by the topping skids, and only cutting a few straggly bits off? I would use 540E if there was any volume of stuff to cut.
I just wondered if you found much difference on fuel, I've yet to see much difference on the monitor or at the tank.

I'll run something like the bruiser on 1000 but I'll use economy if I'm driving around doing low powered work, but we're mostly on hills here.
I take it you're pretty flat if you can drive around ticking over.

I'm not keen on allowing modern engines to tick over too much

It seems to lose less fuel, but no real way of measuring here. I would only do that on flat fields for light topping of course, and my only tractor is a 19yr old (pre-common rail) JD6920 on a 9’ mower. No fuel meters etc, and I wouldn’t be spending more than a couple of hours at it anyway.

12 months ago, there was not a chance of my running the Kubota for more than 30mins at such low revs....

Now sorted ;)

Must admit when we ran fendts our fendt specialist used to play war at me for running it on the drill at 1200/1300 revs, he said better to run at 1500/1600revs for the longevity of the engine…..did tell me why but I can’t remember the reason now.

Straight mower or mower conditioner best for topping? Contractor comes in with butterfly moco’s and even where the toppings are thick they soon wilt away after going through the conditioner so surely better than being laid flat? Thinking of a Kuhn 313 for topping as the McConnell rhino starts striping over 8mph (and yes it’s on newish blades)

Best for topping rushes. Imo
Disc Mower
Flail Mower
Rotary Topper
In that order
A lot of rotary toppers are useless on rushes
Do you not find the disc mower rides up over the bottom layer of rush where it’s thickest? I use our flail for rushes, just macerate it right down too the floor… preferably after spraying but as we’ve lots of other stuff too do in spring sometimes they get too far in front of me.

In my case, the rushes have never got that bad... yet.

Thanks for the replies . Because I already have a topper I think I will do it with that (after sharpening the blades!).

The intention is to improve those fields and spray the rushes but things seem to have got away from us this year. My mower is a Krone and it mentions skids in the manual so am going to look into that . I would prefer it if all the mowing could be done with one machine instead of having two

just spray rushes they will just dissapear over winter slowly giving the grass time to fill in
Waste of diesel topping rushes ( unless a scheme prohibits it like here) as the buggers just grow back stronger. At the end of the day it is a type of grass and like a grass being grazed hard they will tiller until they are thicker. Luckily they are cheaply killed by mcpa.

Why don't you spray it now
Rushes are like willow , the more you cut them the more they grow
