Track tensioners

Have a pair of tensioners that are being over hauled. A 100mm ram section that is extended with grease. This has a sprung loaded peg that pushes on the front idler and gives it some cushioning. The pistons are going to be skimmed on the outside and chrome or stainless sleeves pressed on. We tried the dissammble the piston to make the job easier thinking there would a coil spring or a stack of disc springs inside. However when we slackened what we thought was a locking grub screw some clear gel started to ooze out and the screw was quickly tightened. Guessing this gel is what does the cushioning? Anybody seen this before or know what it is?
The machine is a komptech composter but I guess the track assemblies are bought in. Tia
