Just got a letter ftom askMID saying I will get a fixed penalty of 100 quid as my tractor is not showing up on their data base. Thought you only needed insurance if you where going on the public highway not for use on your own land. Tractor is still taxed until August 2021. Any ideas what there going on about I know the EU was changing the rules but not heard anything about UK making tractor insurance compulsory.

But if the tractor is taken off the road and is now not insured, won't you need to make a SORN declaration?
It will be going back on the road once I have a replacement engine put in but I dont see why I have to pay insurance whilst its off the road. Seems stupid to SORN when its costing nothing to tax it anyway.

Yes, looks like you should probably SORN it.

and

If you own a vehicle and it is registered in your name, unless it has been declared with the DVLA as "off the road" with a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification), it must be insured at all times.

As part of Continuous Insurance Enforcement, a letter is sent to registered keepers if their vehicle is not on the MID and appears NOT to have insurance. This will be enforced by way of a fixed penalty notice or prosecution if the vehicle continues to appear uninsured on the MID.

Had a letter for my Son as he had not SORN'ed his bike. I called and explained he was overseas with the Army, and they agreed it could be SORN'ed and no Penalty. I had the docs, so SORNed it for him.

He had a warning letter first though, as did I a couple of years ago on one of my bikes....
