Agree with the schools and education pushing the thickos into ag because it’s all “their simple minds can comprehend” ....when infact its the opposite Need more talented people entering the industry at entry level.

Dairying had taken me all over the world by the time I was 30.

This has come up in conversation before. There are dairymen out there earning good money and in very reasonable positions with a lot of cherries offered on top, potentially making the job more lucrative than vet work.

The difference is, a vet is going to work 4 days on and then be on a duty rotor, and have the chance to push on and do whatever they like in their career, worldwide. They will not be out of the house working before 6am every morning nor working out there late at night. The responsibility is on-off, not constant and they will still be able to work into their 60s if required.

The biggest problem I see is that no one wants to pay the young attractive money, and the industry is full of persistent negativity which is enough to drive anyone out or away from it.

5 on 2 off, home by 5.30 at the latest,. Live and work on site. More money than a vet, plus a house with all Bills.

In fact, I might go and work for someone, it sounds alright to me.

What time do they start?

I've known people complain they can't find staff yet are expecting folk to turn up, be paid £10/hr and work a 60 hour week. Hold on a minute: A not everyone is Mr Olympia; if I went from what I do now to working a 60 hour week just driving an electric train back and forth I would be crackered, much less out in the cold or doing anything active.

Also, not everyone is going to work flat out 110% for a business that isn't theirs, comparing an employee against your own standards/work ethic might not be the best yardstick or expectation, at least initially.

I wonder if anyone has had success taking on completely green people/job centre people? Do folk even advertise in these places?

I prefer completely green, young and no experience. Fresh out of prison is fine too, don’t care what they were in for. It’s easy to get a felony conviction

You see, to me, two hours work of breaks a day does nothing for me, it is like working a split shift, and you are still basically working a 12 hour day again regardless.

There is a limit to what is possible Ollie. It’s always going to be a balancing act trying to provide a family friendly schedule for employees and getting cows milked while staying competitive.

The majority of cows milked in this country are milked by people working a 12 hour shift. All they do is milk. That’s my version of a nightmare and only brown people will do that.

Is that because they don't wash after a 12 hr shift ?

Just been reading in profi ( an indulgence ) about the 9000 cow Rosendale operation. 8100 cows in milk, milked 3 times a day through 2 rotaries. Parlours running 22 hours a day ,washing and maintenance 2 hours, more than a few Mexicans no doubt.

got to careful where you advertise, several friends ad's for f/worker managed to get onto uk ad, not only did they have some replies from all over the uk, they had dozens of replies from 'the job centre', all of which replied to tick a box, to show they were 'trying' to find work, nightmare.

Watching repeat of countryfile this morning and the girl is saying she works 13 hour days 7 days a week. Not a great image to portray on national TV.
Other person who states agriculture is in dire straights and woe is me is David Hanley.

We need to be tell the consumer/prospective staff when things are good not just when things are commercially tight.
