ppl keep talking about length in tups....why is this desirable?

Our breed's slogan is that 'length weighs and weight pays'. However, I'm not convinced that length is necessarily a good measure of weight on it's own. If you have weight gain (indicated by ebv's, again:whistle:), does the length really mean that much, within reason?:scratchhead: Does the market pay more for a long 40kg lamb, than it does for a shorter, thicker 40kg lamb? The premiums paid for good Beltex lambs would suggest otherwise.

That said, CAt scanning has shown that some long lambs have an extra couple of ribs, so yield a couple of extra chops. Potentially there could be added value there, if they could be identified pre-sale? CT also shows that not all lambs have those extra ribs though, so length in itself is not a good measure.

Quick, give him zolvix!
Ewe size would frighten me, ours produced huge ewes off crap Glamorgans and enormous ewes off some TexX.
[emoji1] Doesn't his index mean that the ewes will be smaller than average? My other aberfields have a similar index and the daughters are same size or smaller than their lleyn mothers

I will add photos of the crew, when the boys are in...

But here are this week's purchases

2x NCC Park tups, and a Texel. Still need another 2 Texels...

The Texel isn't the best, and I wouldn't pretend he is... he was a bit of a budget buy at a sale which trade just kept getting stronger  but I know well the farm he is from and I like how they 'do' their tups - not over pushed or done hard. He is solid muscle and is good skinned, even if a bit slight bodied...
Did you buy him in Essex

those tups sound like they need to go, ive got one to replace as hes a little older but still in good shape but i keep gimmers so hes best away really and one a little thinner than rest and getting a little slower on his feet. To be fair the crap at the last sale i went to i will be keeping em if i dont see anything better o_O

lets hope theres some good stuff at skiptons mixed breeding sale (n)

i was hoping for something like ford4000's tups on left (look great) got a pair very similar to them 2 years ago and their spot on a little dearer than i would normally pay but you can see the quality in the lambs

I'm going to mixed breeding sale at skipton, whats standard like as a rule?

Turned our tups in week last weds slow going to the tup, thought wed lamb 2/3 weeks earlier but going buy raddle marks we be the same as usuall any reason, did think of a teaser but for 40 ewes and for 14 days of the year cant justify it!! Teasers been selling around the £300 mark
Teasers are a job creation scheme for the kids favourite pet tup lambs here, or buy one cheap. Add vet charges for the vasectomy and you'll still have plenty of change from £300.
