Interesting outlook for food. The fact is no one knows what will really happen post Brexit. Crucially Europe has by and large done a better job with animal welfare amd the same canont (I don't think) be said about other countries around the world USA springs to mind as the programme illustrated. As far as GM is concerned I take a prgmatic view in that "man is bound to understand more about the world around him" and understanding genetics is not a area of development that should be cast aside. Look at the progress in the medical world. I'm thinking of health cures here not modifying or messing around with the unborn!
Just a quick thought for all farmers we make the raw material to keep us all alive. In the last 60 years farmers have been driven from the land and we have the worst diet that you can imagine. What we have done is moved the money from farmers to big Pharma. Now doctors are beginning to think about the biome of the gut at about the same time farmers are thinking about the biome of the soil. As a farmer who has spoken three times at the Oxford Real Farming Conference and just a few weeks ago at the Royal College of General Practitioners on the topic of the farmer doctor interface. The medical world is waking up to the fact that food has something to do with health and the majority of farmers will need to do that as well. Unfortunately both doctors and farmers have been sucked into a chemical and industrial world and they are now seeing the destruction that has caused to both or biomes. You only have to look around to see that there has been no significant progress in the medical world. maybe Brexit could be the start of the change back to a more sustainable and local food network with farmers being paid more for producing healthy food. There is plenty of money for this as about 50 billion a year goes on diabetes including the social cost and this is largely caused by food. Our job is to move the money back to farmers who will keep people well and look after the environment but of course those that have it at the moment will fight to keep it. there is no real need to have lot's of environmental policies and farming in accord with nature and the soil with give those benefits naturally. A final little thought for you All cows eat grass. Durwin Banks
