“Meat and dairy consumption must fall if Britain is to meet its 2050 net zero target”

No doubt we will see strenuous attempts to achieve this perhaps even by legislation.

So the question is:

How are you, as dairy farmers in the front line, going to react?
What do you think will be coming down the line?

One of the main problems with dairy is methane and there are studies showing a 90% reduction in methane if cows are fed seaweed. Does anyone know of any feed manufacturers putting seaweed in their cakes or blends yet? We've tried and failed to find anyone doing this. We were in talks with a company called Mootral who claim that their supplements reduce methane by 30% but we're organic and when the Soil Association looked at the ingredients (which are GM free) they said we couldn't use it. Is anyone using anything else?

Current plan here, keep milking a little longer without major capital spend and hopefully get some form of outgoers/retirement payout. What would really set me up would be if I can get planning for a couple hundred acres of solar panels.

Payout per cow, circa 400 quid year index linked for 20 years, 5 500kw windmills and 500 acres of panels. Wild bird meadow the rest and watch the world starve, but in a renewable way

Must be nice to dream ...

Think it’ll be driven by legislation sucking any little joy that remains in the job out of us

Seriously though, I do think we have to wonder what is coming at us. An example being how Wales has pushed through NVZ against all rational
