Didn't see anything bad about a woden 8" vice had a four foot bar on it when it snappedBuy a decent vice for starters, cant fix stuff with out a decent vice and there not maga money.
second get the shaft out of that hub so its easier to handle and the oil seal can be replaced as well then.
Sound advice. A 'proper' vice is mega bucks. Can’t help with the uj but don’t skip the vice. Decent new ones are absolute mega money and you can get all the new bits for those Irwin/record vices online.
this is what i have i think or possibly the next size up? have gone up a bit in price but i wouldn't call them maga bucks and they are good.
Haven’t used a vice to strip UJs now for years, just strip them with lump hammer! Lay the yoke across two solid bars and hit the other yoke flat with the hammer, decent solid blows will shock the caps out and won’t damage the yoke as long as you hit it square on. If two blows won’t move them flip over and try other side. The shock will always move them! Other ootion is as nentioned gas thriugh the UJ. You can still measure the yoke for replacements.
never understand gassing through a UJ! its a messy way, just cut it out with Grinder
Well yes the ones we repair are usually just about to fall out or one half has fallen out, the caps will be as dry as a camel in the Sahara and turned a nice blue colour and the corners of the cross will be rounded off nicely!! Wouldn’t gas one with grease in it!!
