Update phone to smart phone but which one?

Hi
I am thinking I need to upgrade to a smart phone soon. The problem is firstly, Apple or Android?
Secondly, I have a Samsung phone which is reasonably tough and waterproof, so what is recommended as a similar "tough" phone?
Thirdly 3G or 4G? I confess I don't understand the difference!

Apple and iPhone are actually scaling back production and have notified their component suppliers of such.

I've always been android I like how you can customise the platform to your own personnel taste. I've gone SIM only the last 2/3 weeks and bought a Samsung S7 Edge which I will keep until it dies. Nice phone very quick, water/dust proof. Another month or two the S7 will probably drop in price like most after their launch and you may find a bargain, relatively speaking. It's worth having the Vodafone screen protector fitted £15.00! but looks substantial and could easily take a knock.

Most come standard with 4G and when you can get it it's blisteringly quick!

I've not long had a smart phone and got a Samsung galaxy ace4. Its not the most sophisticated phone but neither am i. Got a big clear screen, good camera, 4g and seems pretty tough so far.

Apple are marmite. If you want to do ALL your business with one company and have no control whatsoever over your phone then get an iphone. Some people love them tho, choice is yours.

Ok, so I am thinking it's maybe 45/55% in favour of Android. Friends and family are perhaps the other way round so its perhaps time to try some if I can find an obliging shop. Someone has suggested an I phone 4 as being a good start? What do you think?

iPhone 4 is all most folks need, cheap to pick up unlocked on the used market and pretty bomb proof. Been very pleased with mine

I don't think I recommended that app in particular, but if it works, great. There are a number of battery extender 'eco' options built in to Android as standard, but they need to be switched on to start with. Some custom apps only put a new skin on the standard Android options, but others might well add something extra or add efficiency in some way.

Now then, as to Apple battery life.

I had no problem whatsoever with my 4S but since inheriting my daughter's 5S I have observed some issues. With very light use during a day, beginning with a full charge at 9am, I may go to bed that night with 45% battery still remaining. When I wake it in the morning it will have around 30% charge left, which is as it should be. Except that after a few seconds it shuts down and on trying to wake it again it indicates an empty battery.

I've done a bit of research about this and it appears to be a common problem. I first encountered it while ploughing one day when at lunchtime I noted that I had 50% charge. Yet when I went to make a call at 4.30 the damned thing was dead. I knew from years of using the 4S, that something was wrong, so I've kept an eye on it since. Sure as eggs is eggs it cuts out with about 30% charge left.

There are various theories as to what goes wrong and how to sort this. I can't believe that it is a battery issue as such and one fine day I will try and sort it out.
