Using a barn for painting lorries

If you're not using it for farming knock it down, then you don't have to worry about the rates (y)
No don't get rid of buildings. If the OP does not need the income just leave. If renting out obviously there would have to be a change of use. Tenant would pay business rates if applicable.
The car spraying business could end up with a lot of vehicles parked all over the place with a sorted crap everywhere. I imagine a landlord might have to keep an eye on the accumulation of crap that could be potentially be left behind at the tenancy termination.

If I didn't value my privacy it would be rented out, converted to business units or developed under class Q PDR.
If I knocked it down where would I put my man Cave?
Convert to cold store for spuds/veg etc? If Shed and access is really good speak to a dealer and ask if they’d pay to store machinery there etc? Loads of possibilities which would be risk free and good earners?

I have been asked by a relation if he can use my barn to paint a few lorries, what are the pitfalls regarding potential loss of agricultural exemption for rates.
I would prefer to say no, so what excuse can I make.
Get £100 cash per vehicle, and give them a time line to be cleaned up and gone.

Then go to the local pub and try and spend your £100.

Keep it simple. [emoji6]

Think there’s a big difference between painting a few lorries, and running a full time business from the shed and painting lorries?

Tell them to F off now. Better than doing it later after months of simmering resentment or getting your collar felt by the council. They know it’s not rated for business use as you do. They are trying to pull a fast one and it will probably be you who cops it. What about waste disposal, heat and power etc. It soon adds up. My mate allowed this and ended up with a shed full of Bulgarians dismantling cars for spares. Took some shifting once they’d got settled in then they cleared off and left all the waste for the owner to clear.

@DrWazzock sums it it- the further down the line it gets, the more issues you will likely encounter which become your responsibility.

We all on here don't know your personal circumstances and dealing with family in these circumstances can tend to blur the lines because of personal involvement.

Surely the best and longer term least painful option would be just to tell him no, it exposes you to too much risk that you're not prepared to take on.

Alternatively maybe suggest that if he takes care of all the change of use processes, costs etc and signs up to a long term lease that fully commits him, you may find that he's all of a sudden not so keen.....

Insurance, health and safety. Not a problem till something goes wrong.
I’m not usually one to major on all that kind of thing but where other people are involved it is very important and needs to be addressed properly or not at all.
