Valmet lost No3 powershift

Number 3 powershift disappeared for a while this afternoon, then came back again just as i got back into the yard.
Its a Valmet 8400 4wd.
Its had new buttons fitted onto the top of the gear lever recently so they are probably not the problem. I wondered if there are solenoids that operate the clutch packs or something and maybe its a bad connection to one of those ?

Have you checked the wires at the bottom of the gear stick. The earth was playing up with mine and found it was chaffed at the hinge of the stick.

i think the solenoids have aluminium in them and they wear a wee bit resulting in a paste forming in the housing. not difficult to take apart and clean. that was the problem when we had an 805 many moons ago.

what do u mean lost, as in now drive and when u went down and up again it came back?

had that in ours once, only happen once but occasionally would miss out middle power shift. apparently the solenoids fitted in the factory were replaced with an upgrade inside the first few years, ours wasn't and I thought I was given the wrong part until I checked with agent. Simple job to change and it seems I now have to change the other one, 5 years later. I think this might be your problem.

There is only two but I don't know how they work to get three gears so u would need to check with someone who works at them, my main dealer mechanic told me at the time and how to work out which it was, I don't remember now how to do it.

if I remember , no solenoids working gives low . 1 solenoid working gives middle speed. 2 solenoids working gives high. cant remember which of the solenoids does which. think that solenoids are all the same so to get you out of trouble you can swap faulty one with say difflock or 4wd

@Spotty Dog did you get sorted was it a solenoid. Having issues here with ours won't move in delta 1 but will in delt a 2 and 3 but just the same speed. Thinking that one solenoid is for 1 and the other for 2 with both being for 3, given that without power there is no gears. I have 2 new solenoids in that bank but can't remember what they were for and not sure where the book is.

No, not sorted yet. Took alternator to be tested incase it had intermittent fault causing occasional loss of power to solenoids but it is fine and I haven't done anything else to it yet.
