Yawn....even get spam in the dairy forum now!

seems pretty topical to me on a thread about vet bill costs ? and no one is forcing anyone to do anything just offering options

you would think farmers trying to finds ways to reduce their costs was a bad thing ................ decoupling advice from product supply has saved many arable farmers small fortunes

A crop of wheat has never needed a c-section at 2 in the morning.

are you all buying vet meds from the vet or shopping around ? surely like the ag chem world that's where the big saving can be made ?

compare some of the prices on Farm marketplace to what you currently pay maybe ?

https://www.marketplace.farm/farm-animal-equestrian-and-pest-control/animal-health-and-wellbeing/

I think it’s worth the discussion but meds need a scrip which the vet will charge for and possibly a call out charge to see the animal if they’re losing trade. Might be a good one for vaccines maybe.

you need a script for a lot of the meds on FMP before they can be dispatched - from what's been sold so far in the forst month though there does seem to be plenty of framers who get the prescription and then shop around for best prices

you do for many things yes - seems some do though so I'm guessing there must be savings to be made ? Its a popular part of FMP already and only been available a few weeks

We had a cow the other day was poorly with mastitis rang vet on mobile said what she needed went and picked the drug up cow was jabbed within 15 minutes of noticing it I would rather pay an extra for this service. I think it's essential to have a good relationship with your vet. It's a lot different than selling a can of spray.

Large animal vets are disappearing at an alarming rate. Im happy enough to pay a few % over the odds to try an insure they are avalible when needed.
They very often are very comeptitive with the likes of MVF any way

most of the livestock farms around here also disappeared at an alarming rate but I completely understand your point. It's all about choice IMO and choice can never be a bad thing

Can see that totally, but no harm in having choice, I guess there may also be "consumables" that you just want a good price on and there are times when service matters more than price. At the end of the day though arable or livestock we are all running a business and cant afford to knowingly pay too much more than we need to for our inputs

Choice is a very good thing, and for items like silage sheet im happy to give any one a hammering on price, infact anything i buy except meds.
Its a tricky subject, one that i have talked abkut numerous times, mainly with my vet. If a pay for any product we use in bulk before i pick it up, they wont be beaten by the 2 big online pharmacy players.
Its the bad debt they cant stick when operating on miniscule margins

And there you hit the nail on the head.

Going by the farm accounts, 0.37ppl for all vet meds, visits and AI, including DC therapy. Fully housed robotic crossbred herd, followers reared.

What I can't be sure about is if worm dose is included in there as they come from the general store, mixed on an invoice with nuts and bolts, scraper blades and toilet roll... Would be easy for him to miss. Will have to ask him next time.

As above, it doesn't tell you the full story. It's useful to see if you can see your figure is high, but not necessarily if it's low.

Only drugs kept on farm are calcium magnesium metacam and willicain.
Everything else is on a fetch on need basis or it goes out of date.

Edit
What i will say is its not all about vet costs. Our labour costs would be higher through longer teat prep, extra bedding costs, etc.

Can't really look at just vet costs to get full picture. Its like looking at machinery costs but ignoring contracting costs.
couldn't agree more!

And... is everyone just including milking cow vet costs? A lot of our vet cost is vaccinations which includes youngstock, they also get wormer.
