Visiting a farm in attempt to get a job

I would leave yiur phone at home or turn it off at least, he won't want a phone jockey
I disagree with this one. On my way to an important hospital appt 10 days ago, I came across the aftermath of a fatal traffic accident. The emergency services took 20 mins to arrive and I could not pass along the road and was not going to abandon a clearly distressed other driver, so I phoned and cancelled my appt. There is an 'off' switch and you of course should use it when you have arrived safely

Always carry your phone with you but put it on silent whilst you're talking to the potential employer. Also for me hoodies with hoods up and hands in pockets are big no-nos. And don't bulls**t, if you don't know the answer to something then be honest.

Yes, I won't use my phone while I'm there, but I'll still take it with me and I'll make sure it's turned off

just out of interest, why did you originally offer to work for free?
I've tried loads of local farms and nearly all of them aren't interested, I was down to the last few and I'm just that desperate to get some work, that I'm willing to do it for free, in my eyes getting the experience is worth more than getting paid at my age, as the experience I get , could help me to get a job in the future

good for you, but make sure the experience is worth while....carrying bags or painting gates is taking the pee, teaching you how things are done is a different kettle of fish, just be careful.

That's a great attitude that will take you far. Just make sure that the farm is really on the ball and that they actually want you to learn on the job. I'm sure such a farmer will not let you work for free, although starting pay might be low.
I worked for a farmer many years ago, not for free but I would have worked just for my board and lodge plus food for a year just for the privilege of working there and learning with one of the best, if not THE best farmer in Scotland. I still feel privileged to have worked there today, 39 years later.

Just keep telling yourself it's no big deal, you'll get the job or you won't, don't matter, ( keeps you calmer)
He's just a bloke that your gonna have a chat with!
Handshake and tell him " hi I'm so and so, we spoke on the phone"
He will reply with his name almost immediately but if not just say "sorry I forgot to ask / your name" job done..
Be honest about your skills/experience when he asks, nobody likes a bull sh1tter, and as said take work gear in case but I doubt he'll get you to do anything!
One bit of advice I was given is if you get nervous just picture him on the bog taking a c**p and wiping his ass.... No I've never had to try it!;)

I started off (living away from home) on £10/wk plus board. Learned masses in a year and loved it so much I kept going back for short spells in Uni hols (interspersed with paid employment elsewhere). Still in touch with that family that taught me so much, 30 yrs down the line. They took the trouble and gave me a good push up the ladder.
