VOIP

I have just had faster satellite internet installed, and I am wondering about stopping my BT landline all together and switching over to VOIP calls for the house /office has anyone done this? Who are you using as a provider? Or is it cheaper /easier to keep a basic landline package.

Before you jump ship make sure you fully trial whatever VOIP service you plan to subscribe to...the caveat / killer with VoIP being the rude health of your broadband service.

This is not just sufficient bandwidth but more importantly the ping time and jitter (variation in ping times) for your broadband connection, something which on a satellite based connection may see you get unstuck with VoIP. This directly affects the voice quality of calls, causing choppy or disrupted audio.

Good luck in any event.

We tried voip over wifi linked to a fttp broadband connection without much success we are hoping to try an alternative voip solution shortly which uses mobile signal as opposed to wifi/broadband.

VoIP in a “fixed” setting - an office / home etc with handsets that are using a cabled Ethernet network connection in my experience 100% totally reliable - as long as your broadband/ISP connection makes the grade.

VoIP in a “mobile” setting - running about outside - my recommendation would be to avoid WiFi and VoIP apps on smartphones. Neither are particularly reliable and both eat battery like it’s going out of fashion.

A much better scenario is to use either:

1. Normal or long range DECT handsets with the DECT base then connected to your VoIP service.

2. Mobile handsets with native (built right into the operating system of the phone) WiFi Calling. With a decent WiFi signal that is brilliant.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
