Waste oil heater

Perhaps I should say duel fuel to keep on the right side of legislation.

just looking at a couple, what are people's thoughts. ZM, Hiton or thermobile?

Manual or auto? auto does look good but is it worth the extra £1k?

30x60x15 composite panel workshop.

Cheers.

I had a hiton and it was like standing round a lighter! I ended up getting thermobile 401 and it is the best thing I have ever brought only two years old this will be its third but it is used five times a week and never had a problem with it. I would just buy a thermobile and then you will only buy once. Also I got a very good price on mine and it wasn't a lot more than the hiton. (They dealt with me directly/gave me dealer discount though)

The 400 will burn around 6-7 gallons in a ten hour day if it's worked hard and it's a good day for it!!!

You need your oil to be in a tank or at least a 45 gallon drum with a pump not going to the bottom or a tap 6 inches from bottom to ensure no water gets to your stove. Drain any water from the stove tank every morning, if the water gets into the evaporating bowl, it gets ermmm a bit exciting to say the least.

Don't know if they supply or fit one now but get one or make a venturi type valve in the chimney stack so that you can choke or regulate her when it gets too hot!!!

Follow the instructions to the T when lighting it and it'll be fine, a glug of diesel does not work but the prescribed amount never fails. The oil delivery tube will need cleaning on a weekly basis, combustion tube/chamber every three days. Get an old vacume cleaner located next to it to give it a quick clean every morning around the bowl

The ZM ones look quite good and the auto ones are half the price of a thermobile.
I have a ZM and I wish I'd bought a thermobile one, the chap who rents a shed next door went Thermobile and it does produce a much cleaner burn when using diesel, his is the sealed burner chamber design, mine is the open one (i.e. a load of air holes and just a flat burner plate)
I did tweak it a bit drilling the holes out, I fine tuned it by refitting bolts in various holes until I was happy with the burn and now it does produce a lot of heat, burns clean and i think the output is better than the Thermobile next door but I would choose a Thermobile as you just light it and get working where as mine you need to fettle depending on wind strength/direction and how much ash is in the burner plate etc etc.
Both the heaters are manual light ones but certainly chuck the heat out, last winter i had my workshop up to 26 degrees (it was 4 degrees outside), was warmer than being in the house!!
If you are going to the trouble of getting one, I would try and insulate the shed as much as you can, seal up any gaps round windows and stop any drafts etc.

Another factor to consider is where to locate it, the one I used was at the far end of a 60' workshop, it would of been much better in the centre or closer to wherever you're working the most.

Auto is far better. Flick a switch wait a few minutes and heat. When done flick switch off and walk out the door.
Clean burner chamber once a month if working 7 days a week or if occasional or short days then a couple of times a season.
