Water abstraction for hydro turbine

Just wondering is there a maximum amount (%) of water you can divert from any watercourse in the UK for hydro schemes or is each scheme evaluated separately in terms of abstraction.
Each scheme will have it own abstraction %. There is no set amount.

chap around here, is 'into' water turbines, the making, siting and maintenance, we are talking small outfits, it takes him a minimum of 2 years, per turbine, to get it through planning.
abstracting water from the river, but it doesn't, that's a problem,
killing fish, most can go through the thing, without harm, but, grills, and fish 'steps', sort that out.
spoil the local countryside, ffs its a tiny shed and wires
and the not in my back yard, pillocks, who don't have a clue, about what it is.
not proven yet, relies on 2,000 yr old tech, Archimedes screw
and if you site them on existing weirs, doubtful many would even know they are there.

in the doomsday book, there was a mill here, not a big one, an undershot one, where you let the mill pond fill up, then ran the mill, till the water had gone. There's still stonework in the stream, and the old mill pond is a bog, drains are fudged. Thought it would be good, to restore the pond, by the time EHeritage had gone through their motions, calculated it would cost £5,000 to have all their surveys done. But l was allowed to re drain it, or redo the ditch, that ran through it :sneaky: , so there is now a ditch through it, and l have improved 1/4 of field. Is that better than a nice pond ?
