Water trough

Hi has anyone any advice on how to stop heifers wasting water! I’ve got two groups heifers from 8 months up to calving, using 15 ltr small self fill troughs!! But they spend hrs lapping at them wasting water!! Any better ideas to water them??tia

Some just do that.

In the last shed we built I designed it so that cattle can't flock water onto the bedding by fitting a hood on the bedding side of the trough which forces them to drink from the scrape passage side.
It doesn't stop it but it stops them making a mess of the laying area
