Weld on hooks

Are these cast - or could a mere mortal weld them? Would like to add a pair to my stone fork to carry a weight block and wondered how easy they would weld to normal 12mm plate.

Yes a mere mortal can weld them, they are a cast steel material designed to be welded.
Your choice of welding is entirely up to you.
I'd either pre-heat & weld with a normal MIG or preheat & weld with Mig Flux cored or pre-heat & weld with Stick & be 100% confident that it will hold with any of them.

Question to ask yourself is how have they been attached to your tractor lift arms - a bloke or bird with a welder - Crack on.

I have a 200A mig, thought stick would get better penetration, but could do a couple of passes with mig cranked up.

Didn’t know there was a difference in cast iron / cast steel, cheers

I'd weld them high amperage single pass with a 340A mig or 3 runs with a 3.125 stick rod @ 125 amps but I'm doing it everyday

i read somewhere that 312 rod was used for the same purpose /job with i suppose an assumption of different steels what is your thought on that ?

If there is a manufacturer recommendation then it should be followed as closely as possible & a 312 would be an ideal option as long as the ends are tied in, stops & starts are uniform & no cold lap is occurring

Preheating & slow cooling anything with a hint of dissimilarity helps, reducing the risk of shrinkage & minimising cold cracking

7018 and pre heat with torch and multiple runs ideally bevelled but 6013 will do the job. Or just mig weld with 300amp machine and pre heat with three runs. All depends how big of weight you’re going to put on it 500kg wouldn’t need much but a ton and over it’s going to want to be welded decently.
