Been baling tonight and the top big cog above the ratchet cog on the left side of my baler is fairly warm to the touch, so is the big drive chain that runs on it and down to the front.
From what I can feel behind the bearing is cool and it's running fine. Do these usually generate heat, iv not noticed in the past but I'm being extra cautious as the ratchet one below shat itself last year. Or would it be worth slacking the chain off and removing the cog for a better look.

Yep running in line. It wansnt massively oiled as the auto lube tubes were cut (mice) and iv had to replace them. I wonder if it's not getting enough lubricant, the chain that could do it?

Is the chain stretched? I got told off a baler fitter years ago that if balers were used in heavy silage with not enough revs or power or both it stretched the chains stressed the drive. If the chain is stretched it won’t sit the sprocket hence the heat. Possibly? See if the chain fits the teeth

Take adjustment off and see if chain fits happy round cog. If you can get it right round sat down in the bottom of all the teeth it’s not stretched if it won’t it’s buggered. You might have to take split link out
