You reckon?

the point I was trying to get across is things could be a lot worse. This last year or so has been hard for everyone but sometimes I look around and only then realise how lucky we are and it cheers me up no end.
Yes I do.
Telling someone to be thankful for where they live does not help or solve an issue if they are struggling with mental health; especially if it’s that view that is intrinsically linked with their state of mind; otherwise suicide rates in ag wouldn’t be so high.

The point in the % question is to get people to open up and talk openly and freely. I can imagine if you gave your response it would shut down the conversation straight away.

I believe this came from an NFU course, maybe something you should enquire about.

The last year could have been the worst I have known.
Covid and its uncertainties meant that we were stuck on one continent the kids on another caring for my ailing father no flights meant we were dumping vast amounts of produce and then to cap it all my wife was diagnosed with inoperable cancer and because we couldn’t travel we couldn’t even get a second opinion. So things couldn’t have been worse but eventually we got freighters to move produce, the kids did a good job with their Grandad and the small farm at home and my wife had chemotherapy and really worked at staying alive.
Today we still have the normal farming challenges but life goes on the wife is clear of her cancer for now which considering she only had six months left without treatment is pretty good. My daughter earned £180 waitressing at Goodwood yesterday My Son put his last essay in at University and cricket season is going well so really although if today is rubbish doesn’t mean the future need be. I’ve really enjoyed taking my frustrations out on this forum so if I’m not 100% I’m still doing ok.

So on the negative percentage its the lovely heifer calf that dies after the dam lies on it, the TB test that doesn't go well, the favorite cow that does the splits that you have to put down after a fortnight of nursing, the endless farmer bashing, especially from people who seriously express disbelief when I assure them that cows are milked every day and no, we / they do not get the weekend / Christmas etc off, to the non farming professional who tells me how he loves clotted cream but no, really, had no idea it came from milk but on the positive side, the daily pleasure in taking time each day to pause a minute to look, listen, smell the farm around you. For me, its identifying all the many species of birds that are easily overlooked in our busy routine. The pair of swallows trying to get me in trouble by nesting in the parlour and drowning out the sound of the machine with their early morning song, the pair of GS Woodpeckers that every year bring their new brood to the bird table, the cobwebs covered in dew on a cold morning, the steam coming off a new born calf. Trouble is, all the things I love about the job adds to the negative percent when you look into and worry about the future and wonder just how much the urban community are going to alter our lives.

You can look at it in two ways

90% getting married in a few weeks, got an new venture just about to start and we are booked up with good contract work for eternity, planning a skiing holiday and getting back on the motorbike next month

or

20% trying to organise a dam pandemic wedding that’s been postponed twice which we have lost enthusiasm for, as well as having another business starting at the same time which wouldn’t of happened if we could of got married last year, the phone never stops with all this work we don’t have time for. Worried we can’t afford to go skiing and both trials bikes need a few hundred quid spending on them

It's all about the perspective, well done, crack on, soon be night!

Yesterday morning 90%
Meeting with neighbour where I received a tirade of abuse and threats, actually still 90% because it was so OTT.
Early this morning 50% thinking about yesterdays meeting.
Now 80%, not going to get sucked in. Just beware now that the man has just showed his true values.

Can't get pi$$ed off about the weather despite 84mm rain this month. That's farming. If the crops don't perform at least I can blame the weather!

That what i thought last night, got up there and there,s hardly any body there, did see an old friend there which was good.

This morning feeling like i cant handle my drink any more, 50%
That is what alcohol does, pulls the mind ( and body ) down , that effect can last for a few days as well its a fact. Short term high for longer term low to put it bluntly.
Getting older makes it worse i should think, when were younger we bounced a bit better i suppose.
I'm not preaching or anything , just musing / observing.

Currently about 15%. Mainly due to not having a holiday since may 2019 and also 6 weeks of getting up through the night calving and lambing. Not helped by the fact the my Old man wont even give me a chance for even a night away as he keeps taking off in his motor home for a weekend here and week there 🤬. Its not that I cant cope but would like an opportunity of atleast a long lie now and again. Feeling rather hard done by

Yes and trouble is without that break from a long time with 24 /7 esponsibility the mind tiredness can build up a bit too far , then it will have the effect of pulling 'feeling good percent down for peanuts ' or have a lower start up or base percent right from first thing in the morning I guess.
I'm afraid you'll have to stand up for yourself a bit stronger , he's had his fair share of breaks , now you need one ....tell him .. (y)

Any staff? During my main lambing I had 1 night check off a week (it’s only 9-11pm checking the shed and sorting problems) the lambing staff volunteered but I paid them 1.5x for it, the next morning I was fresh again then.

Ask your dad if you can have a night away in the camper ? It might be easier than asking for him to cover... I’ve got a cracking site if it’s of interest 👍🏻

1 self employed lad. Doesn't work weekends unless busy busy and wont take any responsibilities so no use for stock checking. I was supposed to be away this wkend but didn't want to book in advance in case I couldn't go then he announces hes away on friday and not back till week on sunday. I've got 2 weekends on the bounce checking stock for 4 hours a day (if no ptoblems). No chance for much family time. It winds me up something else. Might get the camper for a wet wkend at some point 👍. Wheres your site?

Reading through your posts gets me thinking, I did reply to Drillman’s comment yesterday about the preceived majority of us living in pleasurable locations have not a lot to get upset about, so what? Living in the country can also create a feeling of isolation and vulnerability. Whether or not this last year will bring about a lasting change in our socialising habits, I do hope not as it’s the simple gestures of hugging, shaking hands I’ve really missed. The weather can be a real percentage reducer to our everyday mental state, I’ve long since realised there’s nothing I can do to change it, accept being a planner and not a reactor. We don’t always get it right, last week I decided it wasn’t going to rain, went spraying only to get caught out but I won’t leave my combine or baler parked up from its last outing expecting it to go straight to work when the crops ripe. Talking and opening up about issues we need help or advice on is something many of us, especially men, have lost or may never had the ability to do. TFF is a great platform to give and receive advise, share pleasures, memories, catch up with lost friends, make new ones, and importantly never feel you’re on your own.

Not having a go at Drillman I know what he meant by his comment.

However the last person anyone who is depressed wants pointing out to them is why they shouldn't be depressed. To be entirely honest I don't know what they need. But I do know for sure they can't be reasoned with or made to see things logically.

About 40% today. Away to gather up deadstock that perished in yesterday's bad weather.
