As per the title, what crop is this, can any one help? I'm only being nosy, I've never seen anything like it before. There are a few fields of it just north of Whitby, along the coast.

Many thanks for all the replies. From what is written above, think I shall avoid both growing and eating them. :D

It would appear the farmer intends harvesting his, as they have been sown into wide beds, a bit like potato beds.

I grew some Jerusalem artichokes in my garden and few years ago, and unless you remove EVERY bit of tuber they will keep coming back

Not difficult to remove with the correct chemistry!!!!! They will be grown in wide rows so that pheasants can run through them, if they are not cultivated once a year with a deep ridger thingy they will be far to thick and impenetrable!?

It's asteraceae species not solanum. I've never had to spray them out so I don't doubt your choice.

Clopyralid certainly does kill spuds & high rate fluroxypyr kicks the hell out of them for less money.

@Brisel - your spot on, Jerusalem artichokes are asteraceae which is the same family as mayweeds and sow thistles, and if you hit them while actively growing Dow Shield will do a job. Need to go full tilt on dose rate.

Or if anyone has Forefront T in the shed, this will nuke them to @ 2 L/ha
