We could easily be self sufficient is everything that doesn't need a heated greenhouse ?
I see a large tomato grower in Southern England has given up because gas is too expensive now to heat the greenhouses. :(
We need a concerted approach, fracking, grants for horticulture, greenhouses etc. And all this re wilding guff in the bin where it belongs.
There's a big recently extended one nr Ipswich shut too .was built saying would use heat from the nearby newish incinerator ,that obviously never happened

Our food can be quite bland in mid winter, compared to the imported foods we can get in the local green grocer or supermarket all year round. We will have to temper our expectations if we are going to become self sufficient. However we have grown some cracking veg in our little plot, and we have just put up a little polytunnel as well so this year should be interesting in what we can produce or at least try to produce.

This year I've grown a years supply of Onions and Chillis.

Tonight I'm having Penne al'arrabiata - Pasta in a hot tomato sauce, lots of fried onion and melted cheese.

I don't grow Durum Wheat so can't claim the Pasta is home grown - but I bet there are people growing Durum Wheat this year. We can do this.
Durum wheat is really tricky , my mate in the Dordogne struggles with it

We’d be self sufficient in a lot of fruit and vegetables easy enough if we accept that it requires freezing in order to supply out of season. And we have the production capacity to be self sufficient in meat and fish I’d imagine.

but don’t think we’re self sufficient in processing capacity in order to take the production to market

Want to get some home grown apple pies in the freezer - pudding dish size, probably 1.5 x Mr Kipling but hopefully a lot better.

Blackcurrent and Apple Pie :woot:
