Someone had (hypothetically) run out of kero on a Friday afternoon and the only similar fuel on site was diesel. Could that be used in the interim in a kero burning esse stove?

And if not, why not?

And lastly, what’s the worst that would happen?

I'd just do it, worst could happen is change jet on burner due to not burning cleanly.

We changed drier from red to kero and didn't change anything.

They're a lot more fussy about fuel than a central heating boiler.
I know someone who had issues with a cooker running a lot hotter than usual and sooting up just after a kero delivery that followed a red diesel delivery. Usual tanker driver says the delivery hose holds 100 litres so makes sure the hose is full of kero before filling any tank connected to a cooker.

Temporarily yes. Kero is very similar to diesel but diesel engines use the 'diesel' as a lubricant. Petrol is a spirit which is why a missfueled diesel will sh!t itself a few thousand miles down the line. All those mondeo fuel pumps that failed around 2006-8? Reps missfueling and saying f**k all about it.
