What is current hourly labour charge at main car dealer?

Today I have been talking to a guy who used to work at local main ford car dealer in Newtown and he said when he worked there 9 years ago the hourly labour charge was £90 an hour!!
He also said that the dealer was finishing as the site has been sold to Aldi although a huge amount of money was spent 3 years ago building a new commercial showroom

Had a similar discussion recently with a mechanic who I think said his dealership charged his hours at £120/hour :scratchhead:

I have said for years The Agricultural industry doesn’t know how lucky it is .
Car dealership , book your car in at a time that suits THEM .
TAKE your vehicle TO their workshop.
Pay £90 -£100 an hour.
Car mechanic,
Basic servicing, oil
Filters and brakes , probably won’t ever strip an engine , probably farm out any transmission repairs might fit an exhaust.
Don’t do call outs just sends for a recovery at your expense .
PAY BILL IMMEDIATELY BEFORE GETTING YOUR KEYS BACK.

Agricultural engineer
Comes to your machine when it suits YOU
Is a ;
Welder
Fabricator
Auto electrician
Hydraulics specialist
Panel beater and painter
Strip and repair engines and transmissions
Alter modify and engineer machinery to suit bespoke applications.
Engineer work arounds to get you going till a proper fix can be done on the first wet day.
Able to work with, and on, an infinite variety of machinery and implements.

All for the “ Outrageous!!!” and scandalous hourly rate of £45 - £65 an hour ( regionally dependent) whilst , at the same time, being regularly pilloried, slagged off and described as a “Main Stealer” ( regularly on here) .

Have a think £100 an hour for some Youf to service the Discovery / land cruiser/ Ranger / Amarok etc etc etc and it’s paid without quibble because ..... well it’s a big fancy dealership and it’s Landrover ( insert other brand of your choice) and that’s just the rate .

Agricultural engineer could mechanic a car , truck , bus mechanic into a top hat any day of the week provides a service unmatched in any other industry and then has the absolute temerity to send an invoice after only 30 DAYS , and then to top it off sends a reminder after 60 .
Somebody really should take these agricultural engineering companies to task about level of service they provide for the money they charge compared with other sectors................. wait !!!!! have I got this backwards ???

Perhaps not ,but be careful what you wish for , the uptake rates for apprentices in the job are as low as I have ever seen and I foresee a real lack of skills and experience lost in years to come and if the AG market has to adopt the 4x4 , car , truck and bus model then be prepared to lose the level of service you currently enjoy and thatbmany take for granted.

Anyone doing repairs for us have a choice. If it’s main dealer we pay as per terms on there invoice. Works been done so we pay.

Independents are told if/when they want paying to give us a bill. We either pay as per invoice payment terms or in most cases on receipt of the invoice. I like to think we look after them with food drink etc when on site and pay promptly but do hope they remember this when we’re in a pickle.

Yes dealers choose to operate on the account basis , not implying anything, just highlighting the stark difference in payment terms with the car industry and the resultant cash flow issues it presents.
Yes I am sure , as I did , they appreciate the prompt payment courteous hospitality and appreciation for their services .
There were many customers I would happily drop what i was doing to go and help for the very reasons you mention.
There were others that I went to because , well it was work, but that ,had I been in the financial position to pick and choose, I wouldn’t have crossed the road for due to their attitude , ungrateful ness and sheer belligerence when it came tomoayment.
Keep looking after them and they will look after you , it’s very much the two way street.

But you'd have to be mad to pay £100 an hour.. As far as I can see good operators only get £12-£18. Big tractors only make a tenner profit an hour when on contract. The whole farm might make a loss in a bad year. Can't see how paying anybody £100 an hour works full stop. Apart from tricky electronic rubbish maybe.. Get the spanners out, you'll save more than you'll ever make...

last year we busted a tractor back window. I rung main dealer. By time we had cleaned the mess out of the cab they had arrived and had a new window fitted.

Total downtime was about 2 hours. It was an insurance job so they sorted payment direct but I made damn sure I thanked them via there FB page for the good service.

Subaru in King's Lynn this year ripped my dad off the tune of £120 p/h plus VAT, bill of near £500 for an Mot and minor service on his 66 reg forester (with no other work required).

My 14 plate subaru XV cost me £287 for an Mot, major service and aircon regas at my local garage with his £33 p/h Labour rates.

No more main dealer for the old man.

Think my pickup was about 400 for 1st service. Done at a year old circa 8500 miles. With 20000 mile service intervals (or annually whichever comes first) I’m not really going to complain.

I once rang a Subaru dealer for a quote on a battery.

I nearly fell out of my chair as they wanted £220 before VAT and fitting.

It's almost like they don't want the work.
