Me (16) and my father (55), live on a 4 broiler house and beef farm (poultry is the main earner) and in the future when i am finished my time at university my father wants to build an egg unit, (an end on end unit with the packing station in between). I have heard mixed opinions on the daily life on a egg unit as i will be working the egg unit while father works on the broilers and beef. Any experiences or tip? Thanks.

well I don't know as like broiler you wont need much equipment and there is a digester beside us that in the future will take all of the poultry manure in NI as it already takes most of our broiler manure. I would like to go into robotic dairy like only 80 cows like my uncles as they seem to enjoy it and that is enough cows to keep your life ok with money and is easy manageable by myself. I enjoy doing the regular and daily routines with the robots as they are easy and the cows keep me happy. i have yes heard that the first couple of weeks in the egg unit are terrible as you have to lift eggs everywhere and the hens aren't adjusted to the routine of going into the house.

I do two days a week in a 32,000 bird unit. It's quite fun. Yes, they can be buggers. But it's warm and the hens are fairly nice creatures.

The trigger words for me are "my father wants to" so my questions to you are - are you going to get paid s decent wage for doing it, and are you happy living in a situation where the old man might spout "I've done all this for you" without you actually getting a say?

I mean, it's not ticket science but if it's you running it it's a fair responsibility. Degree not required though.

Im mostly want to have a degree for a backup and just for knowledge. I do enjoy the broilers and have won the best farmer for over 100k birds award for the poultry brand we work for but i like the sound of the free range layers as seeing the broiler hens inside is a bit depressing at times.

I know 2 fellas producing eggs and the main issue is getting their buyers to pay enough to cover the costs
That part of it seems stressful
never thought of that as we are looking at company's to take us on as there are egg houses popping up all around us with disagreements on their broiler hen firms. They are turning their broiler units into pullet houses

The two things are feed contracts and egg contracts
Miss the feed orders and it’s a 5 figure sum gone and then you need someone decent to sell to
Some are ok to be fair the big supermarkets tend to pull price back if they can

feed contracts where we are, are rlly reliable and same for the eggs for our broiler but i guess broilers and eggs are a whole different ball game.

also many people usually ask my father things and tips and opinions as he is intelligent and has a masters in i forget and i look up to him as a role model very much but i understand very much on what you say as i made this thread to broaden my research as around her it is either guys who just blaitenly take the mic out of me or just probably want to guinea pig me.

Spot on. Don’t let anyone talk you out of doing a Degree. These people that try to discourage you on the whole won’t have one and have realised the mistake they have made-it will be the best thing you ever do. But as said elsewhere; do something for you since it will be you doing it for the rest of your career. Something you think about all the time. It may be farming it may be something completely different. But once you decide correctly; it won’t feel like work at all 😎 good luck
