What is the optimal distance for planting a watermelon on 1 hundred square meters?

I want to plant watermelons and I don't know what width to choose between the bushes and the rows. So far, on one plot, I've resorted to 70 cm between bushes and 100 cm between rows. I'm planting all this in central Ukraine - we are currently experiencing a major drought.

About a metre plant to plant and one row on a 1.5 metre bed. You can squeeze them to 75 cm plant to plant and 1.8 m bed.

And if you plant watermelons more densely, for example, 40 cm apart, what does this mean: there are a lot of watermelons, but probably not big ones, or what?

Probably however if they are closer together you get more disease in wet weather.

Kent grower produced ordinary melons under glass I believe not water melons, a different species, which need even more warmth and also more space so typically 2,000 to 3,000 plants per acre depending on whether irrigated or not. https://www.kentonline.co.uk/kent-business/county-news/melons-grown-in-kent-a73117/
