My small scale farming is to pacify my instinct as I was born a farmer but have diversified into tourism to earn a living. I keep about 30 pure Texel ewes which are a pleasure. Last autumn I bought a few smart, well grown mule ewe lambs - all good so far.

What a stupid idea it was to tup them. Tupped 60, 40 held, 4 smothered at feeder, 3 died of Lepto, 4 cast, 3 lambed ok but not a saucer of milk between them. B!oody nightmare. And this is my hobby! What's yours?

When I was still living in Wales it was wildfowling. Was a 5 minute walk from estuary (cutting across railway track wuth sack of decoys & 12bore was fun!) Mam & dad's house is called Swn Yr Adar which means sound of the birds. As a kid laying in bed could always hear oystercatcher, curlew, wigeon. Heaven.

Edit: and now I live in a land locked county with no mountains! Women eh??!!;)

I would love to live in a county with no mountain , but couldn't be doing with being far from the sea

That's where I spent my first 28 years (and still call home). Miss it every day.

Burning gorse :sneaky:

No thrill like sparking up a good few acres..... wondering whether the fire breaks you've just cut will hold  hearing it roar and knowing there well be a nice bit of grass in its place next year :D &the priceless satisfaction of knowing you've royally pee'd off some eco nuts :D

Technically that's work though I spose
As is my 2nd fave pastime of rabbit &crow shootin'

That only leaves fishing and eating cake! :D

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
