Had a brief look at some wheat today. This is I reckon our best field of wheat, sadly its also our smallest!

Fortunately though the Barley looks generally good in all of the fields.

There have been Conversation’s about BYDV with agronomy groups. barley and wheat going very yellow over the last fortnight. Everything is going backwards. has the tillering stage gone now. It is what in is i suppose.

Talking to my agronomist yesterday, we decided that the wheat that's thin and patchy which I thought was worth nursing through to harvest would be best sprayed off to start again with something else, even if it's a summer cover crop. There is a lot of brome and other grass weeds there which are now past the optimum time for a contact herbicide and with poor crop competition in much of it, spraying would be even less effective.
He says that he has many such crops. Mostly black grass infested, which will be best destroyed, rather than multiplying weed seeds for the sake of a poor crop.
A lot of what looks like a crop from the road now will not be taken to harvest.

I think the yield will be closer to seven. But area more like 1.2 once folk start silaging the blackgrass.

Straw market is in a hush hush panic already. Had two merchants wanting to book as much as possible at £110-£120/t for harvest 24.

I think grain harvest 23 still in store is a keep till May 25 when it’ll really kick in. Family in canada are saying stocks are low. Same coming from family in the states. Where’s it all going to come from because Russia can’t feed the world.
AHDB are without doubt talking the market down and the grain merchants aren’t helping as they are quietly buying up as much stock and forward sales as possible citing a falling market.

im assuming you havnt sold any grain or straw harvest 24 ,interestingly re grain dont know many that have other than bits to pay fert bills

That could be optimistic.
For the first time in my lifetime, I’ll not plant/replant about 15% of the farms arable area.
Just cannot see the point in doing so.

I took my elderly father for a drive around our area this morning. We both come to the same conclusion that it both our lifetimes we have never seen the crops look so bad. It’s bloody awful.

Indeed. The only chap who said he has seen farms in a worse state said it was in 1940-something when it was all flooded after the snow melted.
