I agree with that one hundred percent I left school at 14 without a single qualification I was actually fairly good academically I just hated it knew what I wanted to do with my life and couldn’t see how further education was going to help me I still feel that way now at the same time people from my year who were thick as two short planks have stretched there education out an extra ten years and still work at McDonald’s

Good for them they are welcome to it , if that what you want go for it ? Guy know who is in it and has billions has no degree owns more acres than the local duke , no degree .

I know someone who went to work for a big investment bank, they paid him, from memory, 30K as a graduate just as a golden hello- this is for someone who has no real experience and would be early 20s. This was in addition to his usual salary and bonus which will not be insubstantial. He got the job because he was already known to them and went to a prestigious Uni and very posh private school, he was a member of the right sporting societies and hung out at the right bars and restaurants etc. He then did an unpaid internship there during the summer holidays. In this way you become known and once you've completed your degree (and actually done well at it), you are given a job and will be working amongst people who were drawn from the same place. It's very much a know-who-you-know system. Even if you got a first class degree from a less prestigious Uni, they won't look at you. The wealth your parents would need to front you will not be small either because of the associated costs of what you spent your time at Uni doing.

It is sad but the whole system is rigged. The elites simply look after their own and no matter how much we pretend otherwise social mobility is not quite what it should be. As I have always said, class is no longer about ones income these days.

The sad thing is the above is true in many walks of life, and a great deal of these people are actually high-bred morons who have no clue how the real world works, which is why half the country is going to the dogs as it is full of people with little understanding or experience of the practicalities of business or services.

You won't- see my other post. A high ranked degree from a posh Uni goes a LOOOOONG way in these circles.
I’m not arguing cos they are welcome to it , more to life than money at times quality of life is worth more than some of these people are paid that’s why they get such money , and you do t need a degree to be a footballer ether talent wins every time .

I know a religious group who bought a small farm, planted lots of trees, and when they decided to sell the farm found that they had devalued it considerably by planting the trees. Once trees are planted, the land is locked out of agriculture for ever.

There will always be odd corners, banks or windbreaks where it is a good idea to plant trees, but not on good agricultural land, or for that matter on poor peat land, as carbon is released into the atmosphere when that happens.

I get really annoyed too, with all these people/companies saying we are offsetting our carbon by planting trees. The only way to "offset" carbon is not to burn it in the first place.

Yep, tree planting has its value, but it should not be just the responisibility of farmers to do it, or just their land that is used for any off set schemes.

Not sure it was baiting, but given the amount of collective puzzling about trees that has been done so far, it is interesting to know why people consider growing them to be more important than growing food.

You weren't and I didn't mean it to sound like that.

I appreciated the direction of the thread :) thank you.

I understand why the government may consider them more important (for their own agenda and because trees are fantastic things) but not when weighed up against land that can be used for agriculture.

People read a line of something on here and make assumption after assumption about peoples situations, values and knowledge.

It is indeed interesting to know why some people consider growing them, but I was referencing the other poster trying to bait me on a response, not you.

I have looked into a few of the women in agriculture courses but to be honest I learn most from OH (who has the patience of a saint)

I have also (pre covid) floated about on neighbouring and friends farms doing various things - different people do things differently and I think it is good to see different ways of doing things if you are able to

non ag I have a couple of qualifications in both crafty and "academic" capacities - I currently use them both and looking into a further qualification if I can find the time to fit it in! I like to always be learning something - even if it is just for personal interest as opposed to career orientated :)
Yes I think I am going to try the floating method too with our neighbours and see ehats what.

I agree, learning is for life even if you don't get a bit of paper.
