What to fill the sheds with this winter.

Any suggestions on what would make some money this winter.
Haven't made any silage or Haylage this year, so any stock would have to eat straw and concentrate. Will be looking for something to graze next spring, but wondering if it's as well buying nearer the time and selling straw, or buying some weanlings and wintering them.
If I paid £500 for something now, it'd have to be worth £700 by the spring to cover actual costs wouldn't it?

Would have thought the shortage of straw your best bet would be to sell it, or a safeguard of b and b cattle depending on tb situation your next best bet. Not sure exactly what your calling weanlings? Suckled calves or weaned dairy calves but would have thought your costs would be absolute bare minimum if things go well

I had some b and b dairy heifers last winter, but that's not happening this year.

I think you really need to re look at your costing's if you are only allowing £1/ day when feeding cake and expensive straw because on that diet you will be feeding 4/5 kilos head a day to keep them moving!

Best bet is to put caravans in it.

Got told a few days ago of two large scale beef fhinshers that have/ are converting some of their sheds for storage!

That's true, I only put £200 off the top of my head. It's cost that in concentrate alone. Not really much of a caravan area around here.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.
