EU citizens in the UK can vote in council, elections for the devolved assemblies and the European Union Parliament while we were members, they cannot vote in general elections.
Citizens of the Irish Republic can vote in any UK election provided they are on the electoral register etc. As historically they have never been regarded as foreigners by the state.

Unlike most other countries, the UK only allows it's citizens to vote for 15 years after leaving the UK in a general election. Unfortunately this rule doesn't seem to apply for taxation purposes. I didn't know that EU citizens can still vote in a UK general elections.

Err... you can take advantage of the UK education, health or social security system from day 1 though. Being able to vote affects none of that.

In my constituency the Conservative Party could indeed put up a Muppet and still win the seat!

Many folk vote Conservative simply because there is no other Party worth voting for. Labour contains too many out-and-out Socialists, The lib Dem are just a collection of wishy-washy politically correct bearded ban-the-bomb drips, and the Greens should really be living on another planet.
