Where Do Dead Animals Go?

Our local collector of Deadstock says that nearly all deadstock is now being processed (not incinerated) into different products, a lot is made into fuel now. Apparently there are four plants in the country but as the amount of stock is declining one of these may have to close down.

He admitted that deadstock now has a value, but he cannot get the processors to help to pay for the transport. He believes that if the collection cost from farms was zero that a lot more might be magically found!! So the issue of disposal costs could disappear.

I approached a game dealer for some bones for the dog. No can do, they are taken away to be crushed and the oil extracted is used to generate power. Learn something new every day!

A lot more of my deadstock would be 'recoverable' if it had less cost that's for sure.

But I doubt anyone is going to voluntarily fight for our benefit sadly.

I think our local dead stock collectors was planning on harnessing energy from dead stock, not heard if its up and running yet though. They reckoned that in the average cow carcass there was 50litres of oil that could be used to create electricity!

Pre covid a lot of the skins were salted and sent to China.

The big plant near Lincoln used to process all the cad into bone meal untill BSE put a stop on that .
They still collect from the poultry units round the county but what happens to now I dont know

Exactly. There’s been fortunes made out of dead stock if you look at some of the multi million pound set ups. Charged at both ends in and out.

I was told that ours heads north.then back down to England somewhere.

I know they used to take the hide of the cattle if they were fresh.

The kennels salt the calf skins and sell them. A few years back the proceeds of a seasons skinning bought the kennel huntsman a new range rover.

Fairly sure most of it goes to rendering now to produce Meat and bone meal which can then be incinerated to make kalfos fertiliser

I've heard that roasted bones, particularly good for dogs' teeth, have gone up a lot in price recently.

Ironic that it’s sold back to farmers as fertilisers to feed more stock to produce more dead stock
