With Wheat:
must be small seeded
can grow in late Oct
tolerate autumn herbicides or alter BLW chemicals
any ideas? linseed, vetch, ?

with Beans:
must be small seeded
can grow in late Oct
tolerate autumn herbicides (PDM, kerb especially)
any ideas? linseed, vetch, ?

I think the vetch would stand a reasonable chance with the beans, but might struggle with much of a pre-em stack in wheat especially if there was much DFF in the mix.

I’m will be trying linseed with my wheat and from experience with volunteers I’m happy it should make it though my pre-em of choice ok.

Probably a simple answer to this but being in Canada for the past 25 years I’ve lost touch with pretty much all government incentives and schemes. Growing a companion crop is this one of them

What's everyone using to drill these crops?
Will vetch grow ok at barley drilling depth with pre em

I was planning vetch in winter barley and beans in wheat.

Span beans on and ploughed down last year but didn't get the pre em on anyway.

Judging by how well spring bean volunteers grow in wheat I'm just going to put 50kg/ha on predrilling with the fertiliser spinner then drill the wheat.

Do you get any bad grass weeds?
We have to have a good pre em to keep on top of ryegrass and black grass.
Clover would be good for me what do you do leave it in the following year keep cropping clover silage?
We're quite bad for sterile brome, but avadex and PDM won't touch clover, and Flufenacet doesn't hurt it too badly.
In spring the Broadway star will give it a good whack, but if anything that's desirable to keep it under control and make it release a bit of N.

The varieties I've chosen are very low-growing small leaved varieties, I doubt they'll be suitable for silage. A more productive clover would cause too much trouble at harvest! They are in an arable rotation without grass

Would you share the variety price and showing rate. I'm quite interested to give it a go

AberAce / AberLasting, about 2kg/ha. I spread it with the slug pelleter ahead of the drill, so it gets a very light incorporation. From memory they were both £9/kg

When are you planning to sow these??
I put some in with the peas and maize this spring, otherwise it'll be joining the cover crop mix, and also spread ahead of OSR and wheat in the autumn. I'm trying to give it as many chances as possible to establish.
