I would love to see trials where a variety of 20 or 30 years ago was grown side by side a modern newbie.
We have better Chems, better dressing, better equipment and supposedly better bred varieties but yields don't reflect that.
lets start with brigadeer and norman! come on wheres the seed we had some fantastic yields.

Avalon always looked well, flag leaves like maize leaves.
Wife's father used to regularly approach 3 ton/ac of it, in early 80s. Same land that we only barely average any better yield on now, year on year barring the odd flyer. This despite 40 yrs of plant breeding and chemistry. Anyone else sometimes feel the donkey ears growing out the top of their hat?

I still grow Claire, have several hundred acres this year and love it’s flexibility. I use it for early drilling from 1st week of September but it’s also my choice for late drilling because it tillers so well. In the nightmare year of 2019/20 we planted quite a lot in March with good results. I also grow Siskin, Gleam, Skyscraper, Graham and Saki and Claire is usually top or close to top yield wise. This year it did suffer with YR in early June which required emergency Teb and this has affected yield.

We do seem to be running faster and faster on the treadmill, I’ve noticed that even in my very short farming career compared to most on here.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
