Which quad?

I'm thinking of getting a quad.

Probably 2nd hand.

Just for pottering around on really - bit of slug pelleting too.

Any recommendations?
Good ones / bad ones?

Cheapish ideally.

I borrow one at the moment, it's an older Yamaha, I can't quite remember the model name. I reckon there's a 400+ engine it. Got really difficult ground here, it's automatic which I like because I can just concentrate on not falling off or tipping over, 2 and 4wd selectable, electric start. Nice machine, very capable.

Lots of farmers replace their bikes when they are just in warranty, which is usually 2 years.

So, in theory, there are lots of nice bikes out there that have dropped by 30% from new but are nothing worse than new. In practice, it's difficult to guarantee that they haven't been abused and neglected - just because the farmer knew he was chopping it back in shortly.

How about getting to know your local independent dealer? and seeing what he'd recommend/sell to you. He'd know his stock, what's coming in and what's trouble to touch.

I use a mates Honda with electric handlebar shift for night shooting, awful. As you always need two hands on the bars at all times. I always liked the Suzuki 450 and 700 auto quads.

second hand Honda 450 foreman

models just before the electirc shift come in.
straight 6speed gearbox

i know someone who bought an old honda 350 it must be 15 years old, yes it is battered but it still works fine, think he paid £500 for it!!

very hard to beat a honda quad.

TRX300 4wd here, old as the hills and just keeps going, cheap bits (with aftermarket options) and easy to work on - £600 should buy one in good working order.

Go for a foreman as suggested if you can justify the extra expenditure.

I agree with the above re the Honda! Honda ATVs are "bullet proof" as they say. They keep on running! We use an old 1997 Foreman 400 for pulling our timber forwarding trailer, which is normally loaded with at least 400-500kg of logs, over some fairly rough, steep ground.

Parts are easily obtained and once you are finished with the bike and want to sell it on you'll most likely get your money back or even make a profit!

Are mules / atv's a better option than a quad.

I'm sure you're all aware, Lincs is as flat as, so don't need the 'get anywhere' capabilities of a quad.

Are utv's worth the money?

Any good second hand recommendations?

Yamaha are the best built quads and most comfortable, The most stable on hills.
I changed from Honda because price of Genuine Honda parts & servicing is ridiculous, cost of ownership is 4 times that of other makes:mad:
