ok guys
I have bought the cultivator ( he-va ). Which seeder would I buy to mount on top to sow osr mainly but also cover crops.
Any help advice of any to avoid or invest in would be great.

Thanks.

Thanks.
Just trying to see if there is any to avoid. There is a couple if second hand opicos kicking about, but wonder if that would be worth the hassle. ?

Thanks for the shout.

  • I've used an early Opico Hatzenbichler Air 16 originally bought for a 6m set of rolls for doing osr in front or sluggies behind the gangs at speed. That one was shockingly unreliable but a good idea and I think they are much better engineered now. There seem to be a lot around so they can't be useless! They would do higher rates of seed for CCs.
  • I sold the Opico for a Stocks Wizard - a bugger to calibrate but fine for low rates of small seed. Never tried it with sluggies or grass but no reason why it shouldn't work. You can vary the number of outlets on this type and the Opico (and Horsch) by just rebuilding the metering roller with different sized teeth or blanking plates
  • I have a Techneat Terracast for sale - again, hard to calibrate accurately but ok for osr & sluggies. With one single metering unit you can easily adjust the number of outlets by putting different sized heads on or blocking off outlets and this was the flexibility I wanted. You can get 4 different sizes of fan depending on how far you want to blow the material, 2 electric for up to 6ish metres and 2 hydraulic for 6 - 36m. The opening at the bottom of the hopper wouldn't take damp canary grass seed at high rates as it bridged. With the hydraulic fan it easily did 6 kg/ha metaldehyde pellets on a 12m set of rolls at 10 kph. An air bleed from the fan now pressurises the hopper which should cure bridging issues.
  • I have recently bought a second hand Vaderstad Biodrill for doing 30 kg/ha grass seed on a 12m set of rolls at 10-12 kph. The hopper and metering unit is much bigger and the fan is off a full size Rapid drill so I'm not worried about capacity. It also does 200 kg/ha peas & barley mixture on a home made 2m cultivator comfortably.
What's the width of your cultivator @storming ? How fast do you want to go and what materials will you be putting through at what rates?

How much do you want to spend, how wide is the cultivator, do you need on the move seed rate adjustment, do you want to seed in row or broadcast?? Have a look at our website www.bullocktillage.co.uk
We can supply you with a basic 300 litre machine for less than £2k but if you want to spec it up with gps it can be done....££
If you don't want to be bothered with making brackets or fitting spreader plates then you might be better off talking to Opico as their machines are good (we have one on the farm) and they can supply installation kits.

Thanks that's a lotta info .

I am guessing 8 to 10 k just enough to make a seedbed. Looking to set it up to do osr straight into stubble and also the ability to so various cover crops.
Looking for a seed box that's easy to calibrate and the ability to change seed rate on the move and possibly a GPS ability to future proof it.

Stocks wizard for me really easy to calibrate simply punch in a target rate run out some seed weigh it change the figure to match weight job done. And you can set it up for however many outlets you want. We've a wizard and a sumo seeder and they're basically identical

I need to sow in bands for the rape and the full 3 m width for the cover crop. I guess I would need to change fro m a straight pipe to a spreader plate ?
I also need to set up a 6 row distribution head with pipes to the front legs.
Have spoken with opico but it seems expensive.

Is it possible tho ? Tractor has full rtk so seem sensible idea. Can't find a lot of info on it tho !!

Is what possible?

You only need a crude speed signal for GPS to run the motor. Taking signals from the RTK just complicates things. What you save on hardware will be spent on wiring and debugging. Patch antennae aren't expensive. Just make sure you pre start the metering roller when wanting to go from a standing start as there is a short time delay before the metering roller starts turning.

I've been thinking about fan capacity. A 3m seeder at 10 kph has a spot work rate of 3 ha/hour. At a seed rate of 20 kg/ha that's 60 kg/hour or 1 kg/minute which doesn't sound too bad but wants thinking about for hopper size and how long you go per load.
