whats everyone putting in this year? as my grain is normally high on N I was thinking of going for "Fairing" has anyone else tried this variety?

Doesn't look very attractive on paper.
Yield for north region UK is 97% of control.
Concerto is 95% and well behind many varieties on the list.
I'm going all Laureate which is 109% but will be aiming for low N market.
Do you have a merchant offering a good contract for it?

better than concerto however, that looks a strong yield whats it like for straw? have you considered sienna?
Laureate appears one of the shorter ones for straw at 74cm. Sienna a good bit longer.
Both merchants I deal with take Concerto & Laureate but after that they each have their own 'pet' varieties so went for one they would both take.

I need plenty straw however it seems fairling is short too, ive bn offered £150 min

Sienna yielded a great crop of straw last year for us. And grain. Growing it again this year as its a great variety, or just see if it was the year that helped

Grow what your local buyer wants!
I've seen nearly all the spring barley varieties grown side by side in trials and there isn't massive differences in straw yield from their respective heights, I think tiller count is probably more of a factor but I might be wrong.

Interesting as theres only 4-5 cm between most varieties surely this can make a huge difference

Some PGRs don't alter the height of the crop as much as you might think. Nitrogen dose and timing is a big factor, too.
Look at what the LSD is. It should say it on the list.
Wtf would you be using pgr on spring barley if you wanted lots of straw? You would have to have ridiculously high fertility!

because if you don't it goes flat and gets rejected due to higher screenings
I stand by my assertion, your land must be very fertile. Mine wouldn't fall over unless on black land if grown for malting. You must be getting massive yields

Barley is weak strawed, it stands like a load of noodles. Brackling is one thing, going totally flat is another. The cost is 5/8ths of bugger all and in my area where fertility is virtually unlimited, I don't see the harm in a shot of 3C at least.
