Who's making hay next week...

30 acres in total to do, across 6 fields. All in little bales for sale to pony girls. All cut, turned, baled and carted by my Massey 362 and me only! In fact the only help I get is an ex dairy farmer from the village who is in his 80's and turns up every day and can predict exactly how many days each field will take to 'make' and keeps saying 'cheap hay is good hay' and tells me to go home and let the wind and sun do their job.

30 acres down. Never dared to make hay on new seeds before, in June. Going to take some killing but this is the year for it.

My old rule of thumb depending on crop
10 good small bales to 1 good round bale.
8 round to the acre I get average so 2 acres 160 bales
This is ruff estimate for my grass and land
Thankfully our little baler stayed in the nettles, I had 178 rounds off 18 acre yesterday. 1700 little bales doesn't sound attractive in this heat and I'm glad to be taking rest today :)

Dropped 18 acres yesterday, mix of clover old meadow grasses overseeded with high sugar ryegrass and festulolium so hope it will have a bit of feed value. Going for 7ft hestons so can fit 2 per bay.
Baler man looks at me daft when I ask for 38 at 7' and rest at 8' (18' bays).

Only on the slopes that the mower cannot reach then rake them down
In 1919 my great-uncle was visited on a Sunday by some church elders because he was using a scythe to cut the areas the horse and reaper could not reach. Having just spent 3 years in French trenches he suggested that if the Germans could try and shoot him on a Sunday then he would carry on cutting hay

This happened yesterday evening.

About 8ac at a guess.
Not much on really, don't dare cut much more for hay, we don't have enough indoor storage either.

Got a good crop of buttercups and socks with a bit of grass thrown in for good measure.
