why are people so stupid

... as "I know my rights" pedestrian lies in the A&E dept, studying his Highway Code....

A pedestrian in the road will always get my full attention as I recognise the inherent danger they are in. I also always let motorbikes overtake because if they are in front of me I can see them fully. In modern cars with big pillars etc they have sometimes nicely hide in your blindspot and they aren't very big in the mirrors to begin with.

Sometimes you would help most by making continuing progress until a clear opportunity for the emergency vehicle arises.
Although when I did this at a red light junction when the blue lights and sirens were blocked by myself i ended up with an automatic fine - so I decided to let it go to the magistrates - ended up costing me more than double ….🤦🏻‍♂️

Never again - they can wait……

As I understand it, there is no obligation to pass a red light just because an emergency vehicle is behind you. To run a red light is obviously inviting danger to yourself. You must at all times comply with traffic signs and signalling. I'm not even sure driving on to the pavement to allow them to pass is legal...

I've no issue with motorbikers- I tend to let them pass as you are never going to be held up by one of them.
More and more motorist are being thoughtful towards motorcyclists and I try to acknowledge them when I can. Thank you. There will always be the 'dog in a manger' type who try to impede your progress.

Regarding ambulances with blue lights on, most cars can out accelerate an ambulance so , providing the ones at the front have seen them there is no excuse for getting in the way.

If everyone stopped showing tyres and tarmac in front you'd be surprised how much space you can create by driving forwards tight (both directions)

I've noticed in many urban situations these days some motorists just don't bother to even try to yield

Motorbikers are no issue, they never hold you up, they overtake and they are generally gone on way ahead. I just don't like them behind me as I just can't see them as well. I love bikes, I think they are ace machines and could own one just to look at it all day but I can't be trusted with one, simple as that.

Most cars accelerate, doesn't stop cars at the end of the slip ways not going fast enough to get in front of a wagon!

I'll never forget when I started a new job making and building wooden stables and garages when I was sat as a passenger in the 7.5tonner the firm had when the old boy driving got to the end of the slip road to join the M5 at Gloucester and he stopped to wait for a break in the traffic:oops:
Needless to say I got him to pull in at the next services and wouldn't let him drive me again, I ended up doing about 40 to 50,000 miles every year in the thing Nd he never got in the driving seat when he knew I was going to be on a job he was involved with. Why the boss man kept him on was beyond me.

You can't go through a red light for any reason ,unless instructed to do so by plod.

Reminds me that my old man was just given a driving licence during the war so he could drive a milk float. Never took a test in his life … and it showed

The red light zone in question here had pedestrian barriers to both sides within 300mm of the kerbstones so there was no opportunity to move onto the pavement to create space for either lane of traffic - And the lights had only just changed so everyone now on amber/green lights were still stationary and well aware of the emergency vehicle 🤦🏻‍♂️

Im not sure if anyone else has noticed but I’m convinced the standard of driving has taken a real nose dive since lock downs. I’d like to see some stats on accidents, I’m sure they’ve increased quite a lot since
I have to agree, coming off jun 3 of the M50, there must be at least 1 car a week that can't make the bend and collides into railings , I just don't understand it, I would of thought brakes on modern cars would be far superior to say a mk 2 escort with full set of spots on.

Back to he original question, why are above half the drivers never ready when the lights change? by the time they realise and put the motor in gear, let off the handbrake, they're the only vehicle that gets through before it's red again.
I was happily sat watching the red light out the drivers window while ago, wasn't until the driver behind blew his horn I realised that was just for those turning right 🙈

To be fair the straight on light wasn't easy to see. Don't know how many didn't make it until the Plymouth posse moved in on them.
