Interesting. IIRC in September/October labour published a document that stated they was going to doing some tinkering. It is political vote catching and as usual there are lies, damned lies and statistics floating around. The bit with the NFU is sticking out the shadow Defra secretary he may or may not be there after an election or in a different role completely but if the shadow chancellor/treasury people have confirmed that perhaps a better outlook on rates not being tweaked etc.

The current UK Gov was doing a review of IHT on land etc now it could well be both parties have a bit of inside info(civil servants leaking info etc) of what is happening to that review, I do not know.

Cannot read the Financial Times link but one was from the NFU (interesting to note that no quote in that media announcement was from a Labour source only NFU people ) and one from FT which again could be misinterpreted be better if they was direct from labour documents headings etc. The devil is in the detail!
All MP's or potential MP's do not speak the truth it is just a case of what they backtrack on, if they become elected etc. and if they are not elected, no problems!

"A bill for £50 in burger king would stop families going there for Sunday roast and quite right too".... that would surely reduce staff requirements if not viability.. I am playing devil advocate though, there are far too many food and drink outlets and they provide far too little to our economic activity.

Switzerland manages. (y) About the only thing they do there is make chocolate and sell finance.

If Labour were to promise to ditch IHT I should think they would collect up a lot of otherwise serious/long term Tory voters who have long since realised the Conservatives have done nothing for years.

The FT article was citing the shadow environment secretary's speech at the CLA conference (so the bashers can't even blame the NFU for it). From that article...

The Labour party has ruled out scrapping inheritance tax relief for farmland if it wins the next general election, in a move welcomed by landowners but that would limit its future tax-raising options. Shadow environment secretary Steve Reed said on Thursday that he would not axe agricultural property relief (APR), a tax loophole that allows landowners to pass down their farms to their children tax free, should a Labour government come to power. Speaking at the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) conference, Reed was asked whether Labour intended to get rid of the tax break. He replied, “we don’t”, adding, “we have no intention of changing APR”.

What they say and what they do is not always the same though regardless of which party.

I do hope you're not suggesting that they were telling the audience what they wanted to hear. :wideyed: That would be like the Conservative ministers going round in 2016, telling farming audiences that ag support would be even better after Brexit, whilst telling townie audiences that they could cut import tariffs and slash food costs...

No, I wouldn't trust either lot, but @Flatland guy was wrong to say that they had a stated policy to do away with ag property relief, when the opposite is in fact true.

I don't suppose a labour would ever do a U Turn on a policy 😉

I was recently chatting with an old uni mate, who is now a financial advisor, about a few acres that have been sold near me for £12k per acre.

He was asking me why anyone would do this from a financial view point, because if they invested in the stock market they would get a lot better return.

Stock market has been averaging about 10% growth over the past 70 years, one £12k acre would never return £1200 per year, especially with no input.

It got me thinking 🤔 is he correct??

The only argument that I could think of was for inheritance reasons, but he assured me that a Stock ISA is inheritance tax free and £20k per year can be put in with no tax on any growth in value.

Are there reasons why somone would buy acres instead of investing?

i don’t regret buying a single acre that we have over the last 20 years - it’s made me a lot more wealthy, it’s basically been free thanks to inflation
