Off Topic.
Have the owners of Tarrawingee Farms down sized, as I can’t see any thing about them on the internet?
In rural circles here, it’s not really polite to talk about who owns what or how much land a particular individual or family owns . . .
You certainly never ask . . .
People here like to stay private, in comparison to the many UK & North American YouTube heroes . . .

in an Australian context, “dryland” cropping simply refers to growing crops without irrigation

how you do that is up to you, but in our environment the only long term viable solution to that is zero till / direct drill, retained ground cover & conserving all possible soil moisture ( in other words, don’t waste all that soil moisture by digging the ground up 🤦‍♂️ ), the crop relying on rainfall & stored soil moisture.
Just like most of the UK crop ( apart from the stored soil moisture, you cast nts are hopeless at that 🤦‍♂️ )
This bloke didn’t get the memo.

in a wet year like this year the price of light weight box drills especially the mf 30 sky rockets, because many folk drag one out to try and get on. so why isnt there a market for these drills in the uk?

@Giorma what price would a drill like those be ?

I paid 5500 USD for my seeder.
mine is like this with a roller 28-row 4.5m width, but in the wet soil roller doing nothing, it needs dry soil to do its job.

Actually the only way to get ground dry enough to drill this past ten months is to plough it

we have gone off ploughing, as a matter of routine, but in weather like we have been having, it is about the only way to dry soil out.

ploughed in feb, to get wheat in, and spuddled some in, waste of time, had to resow half of it with spring barley. But the ground had dried out enough, that we only needed to but the spring tines through, to create a seed bed. Another bit unploughed/worked, turned up really wet and claggy, 2 days of wind and sun, and no rain, dried out lovely.

all the maize ground will need ploughing, rather than tines. Different weather means different methods.

interestingly, although no one here will believe me, the reason i gave up conventional cultivation & went full zero till, was because of a run of wet years & floods on this floodplain.

I also used to farm a lake bed, as the water retreated I just kept planting to the edge of it. Wouldn't have worked if Id disturbed the ground first . . .
