Why should I stay..............

Isn't that capitalism at work? Supply and demand, there is a steady supply of people willing to pay those huge sums of money.
Its not capitalism , its more market manipulation for votes etc to avoid negative equity at all costs.
In a capitalist system rich people or those with surplus funds would invest/provide venture capital for profitable projects with risk attached with the hope of a return above the bank rate, but its more attractive to simply buy houses etc , in this system they jack up land and property values that the overheads for creative/productive businesses in the uk just are not competitive - on here many morn the loss of their local pubs ,shops ,services , live markets or abattoirs which couldnt compete with capital/income values of the land they stand on .

You don't get Sheeted Somerset's in France ? I knew they were behind but my goodness
Think you and A must be behind, I can think of half a dozen Belted herds in France run by ex pats and French

This tickled me in the schedule of the Mid Somerset show :

For my Galloway breeding friends I note there are 7 classes open including "Belted, Plain & Bigot" . I have a few friends who could comply !

I'd happily sit atop the Plateau de Millevaches and look at some proper Limousin or in the Cantal overlooking some Salers

In fact at my current second home I overlook some proper Hereford cattle
Why don't you just move ? why the need for two homes ?
If there were six people that liked cream cakes and six cream cakes would you take two ?

A Son of 10 who will still be only 20 in 10 years time. By the time my Grandchildren come along (Daughters of 30 and 29 now) , the second home will be a family home not just mine. And I may choose to let it out too. All that money goes back in to the community too

Not sure about that cream cake analogy; what have you got more than one of ?

Food and shelter cant be left to the freemarket, hence farmers get subsidies.
Housing needs to be regulated too , which it was till 1988
If you were correct on this then nothing can be left to the market as what you are saying is that the state can better deliver these key items, if it can better deliver these then it must follow that the state can should take over the market completely, why would you only want the most competent to run food and shelter it would surely be better to have that level of skill delivering everything. Lets look around the the world for how to do it, Russia, didn't go so well, Poland, Czech, and all those countries that became the USSR didn't go so well, China, no thanks, Cambodia, North Vietnam, Venezuela no, sorry there isn't one example thanks. The free market is the best system so far (as opposed to 'capitalism') is not perfect, but better allocates resources and rewards labour.

Its hard to see clearly when you've a weight to lug around on your shoulder.

It follows that if area A start imposing controls of some description on second homes then this has a displacement effect and will push the marginal second home owner to secondary location where he will be more competitive, this then increases the demand in this area for controls on second home ownership, thus causing a sort of domino effect. Plus the effect of local authorities not wanting to be seen as lax on these things the spread starts.

The problem is simple, not enough homes to meet the demand, if the free market were allowed more homes would be built in the areas people want them but this can't happen as there's quota restriction via the planning permission system.

Would I want system where you are free to build just what you want, no, but I would favour a system where the presumption is that you can build rather than the current one where you can not.
