Mad pheasant is upping his game this morning. Decided to try and hitch a ride on the quad. Think he likes me really.

Looking out of the kitchen window yesterday I saw this buzzard catch a hen pheasant. Not sure whether it caught it before it hit the fence or as it hit the fence as that bit was obscured by a tree at the critical moment.

Not a buzzard but an immature female goshawk. Looks like it may be an escaped/lost bird as there appears to be a jess (leg strap) on the left leg.

Report to the police as these are valuable birds and the owner will be anxious to get it back. If it has left anything of the kill, it will probably be back as hawks are generally lazy and won't hunt if food is already available. If it was mine, I'd have a trap set for it.

You are correct. I zoomed in on one of my other photos and I can see yellow jesses on the legs. Haven't seen the bird since and am not aware of anybody locally flying hawks.

I lost one years ago that turned up on a free range chicken farm. The hens were locked in sheds at night but let out during the day. Every morning at dawn, I'd sit with a long string in my hand waiting for the goshawk to go into my trap. I think it took three days! I never actually saw the hawk approach, just a flash of a wing as it alighted on my bait. The way they hunt, you'll seldom see them except at a kill like your own. There are more about now thanks to escaped falconers' birds and, I think, some deliberate releases.

I had a pheasant that was attached to the quad a few years ago .It would appear and chase the bike .It got really aggressive and would attack you .When you turned around it was always there having ago .It used to get on your Wick .And after a month it disappeared.
